Research shows that ‘play’ is the natural way for young children to learn because it provides self selected activities. From this base the children have the freedom to explore the world around them on their own terms asking and answering questions as they go.

How do we approach Early Childhood Education?

At Hillarys Community Kindergarten we embrace a well-balanced program that offers play-based, child-selected activities and direct instruction, provided by qualified, experienced Early Childhood Educators. We actively embrace the underlying principles of the Early Years Learning Framework:

Belong - so a child has the feeling they are part of a group, a family where they feel secure.

Being - allow each child to be an active participant in this environment.

Become - encourage and scaffold the growth of each individual child emotionally, socially and intellectually.

“Play is the human instinct to educate itself.”

We highly value the input of each family and the broader community as an integral part of the team and the program. Our practise is reflective in nature which allows for growth and continual improvement. The environment reflects a connection to their real life situations so that the children feel confident to make independent choices and be responsible for the direction of their learning.

We value each child’s disposition towards themselves as learners so that they are engaged and are willing to take risks.

We encourage and develop respectful relationships that reflect equity, inclusion and diversity offering open channels for communication and change.

Hillarys Community Kindergarten will strive to provide a learning environment that is a place where children want to be and where they feel happy and valued so that each child will flourish and grow to the best of their ability.
